As you know, I dream pretty BIG. I admitsometimes too big. Bump that! Thinking BIG just gives me more wonderful thingsto strive for. So, my work is telling me to "Go BIGGER! Much Bigger!" I still want tocreate little things. Ok, ok smaller artwork but only when I need a break fromthe BIG stuff.

I want to work on four, five concepts at the same time. Myart has taken over my home and I am ok with that.

However, I need more space. I want my HOME (Living room,dinning room, laundry room…..) tofit into my STUDIO. Similar to Mr.Smith’s old space. Just in case you need a visual reference.

Yes, I grew up in Arlington....

I was persuaded (tricked) into goingto a pre-season marching band presentation last night in Arlington, VA. Itwas interesting. The band was…. good. Halfway through it I thought my son mightsprint back to the car and refuse to come out until it was done. Actually,maybe that’s what I wanted to do. But I couldn’t, I was supporting a familymember and I was in Arlington. Which meant I had to behave as an Arlingtonian.I appreciate the time and energy that the kids, the parents, and the schoolhave put into establishing and maintaining this band, but…. the performance felt like asoothing bedtime story at 7:30 pm on a Friday night. Yes, I grew up inArlington but I do not miss it AT ALL.

In Fall 2010, film and anthropology students from American University’s School of Communication and College of Arts and Sciences, working with the Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum, assisted community artists in Southeast Washington to create their own original digital stories.

In this class, COMMUNITY DOCUMENTARY: Stories of Transformation, storytellers use photographs, family documents, community archives, and their own voice to create first-person narratives.

Amber Robles-Gordon received some blunt criticism during her graduate studies when she was told she couldn’t seem to separate herself from her artwork. Robles-Gordon became introspective, and identified why she’s so entrenched in her art.

Amber Robles-Gordon WIRED June 18 – July 16, 2011

Pleasant Plains Workshop is pleased to present a solo project, Wired, by artist Amber Robles-Gordon. Robles-Gordon recently received her MFA from Howard University and works in mixed media, textile, photography, and painting.

All of the works presented here have wire as their structural core – it forms an armature used by the artist to build wall works that are familiar in their materiality yet remain firmly grounded in abstraction. Using found objects, the works are public declarations of private mementos that explore patterns, color, and materials, while engaging with Robles-Gordon’s cultural identity –a blend of Caribbean, Latin American, and African American.

In this regard, the two works that anchor the main gallery wall act as family crests with their regal form and tight-knit coils, while many of the other works are more playfully ceremonial, harkening thoughts of Carnivale and celebratory cultural objects. The artist’s site-specific window installation, ‘Beyond the Visual Rainbow,’ is evocative of a net cast by the artist that captures fragments of a personal history within the entangled bits of clothing and household items. Robles-Gordon was born in Puerto Rico and grew up in Arlington VA. Her family heritage stems from Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, and British Virgin Islands. With ‘Beyond the Visual Rainbow’, she charts her personal history through a patchwork of cultural and familial traditions, as well as object that evoke femininity and the coming of age.

Robles-Gordon describes her practice as being influenced by artists such as Sam Gilliam and Alma Thomas. The Gilliam reference is perhaps most striking in Robles-Gordon’s work on draped fabric (not exhibited here), but is also relevant in her use of color and assemblage materials in Wired. Her playful approach to art-making is also noteworthy. The absence of complete closure, and her interest in materiality, is attuned to the concerns of contemporary abstractionists like Cordy Ryman and Lauren Luloff, both of whom also work with sculptural wall works.

The artist’s use of unconventional materials to create a new vernacular narrative is also evocative of Eva Hesse. Both artists have underscores of femininity and gender identity in their work without necessarily wanting to be categorized by those decisions.

With this exhibition, Amber Robles-Gordon has achieved a visual celebration of color, texture and identity. Robles-Gordon is an emerging artist whose work is hard wired for success.

Bin Laden news finds pundits forsaking usual comfort zones

It's hardly a revelation to note that the cable and talk-radio commentariat is divided on many leading issues of the day. But in the wake of the military raid claiming the life of Osama bin Laden, the range of pundit opinion has exhibited some striking crossover, with traditionally caustic conservative critics of President Obama congratulating the daring and resolve of the successful mission. There have also been some notable misreadings of sardonic intent--plus some simple confusion about how to process the dramatic news.

Take the remarks of "Daily Show" host Jon Stewart. In the clip featured above, the news satirist spent the first few minutes of his Monday's broadcast skewering Osama bin Laden, who was killed a day earlier by U.S. special forces in Pakistan, before offering some more somber reflections.

"I am way too close to this whole episode to be rational about this in any way, shape or form," he said. "Last night was a good night, for me, and not just for New York or D.C. or America, but for human people. The face of the Arab world in America's eyes for too long has been bin Laden, and now it is not. Now the face is only the young people in Egypt and Tunisia and all the Middle Eastern countries around the world where freedom rises up. Al Qaeda's opportunity is gone."

Meanwhile, the conservative talk-radio baron Rush Limbaugh seemed to suffer something of a tonal misfire, as some listeners took his comments on the bin Laden raid--which seem unmistakably derisive in print--as an unprecedented show of heartfelt gratitude to President Obama.

"President Obama single-handedly came up with the technique in order to pull this off," Limbaugh said on Monday. "You see, the military wanted to go in there and bomb as they always do. They wanted to drop missiles and drop bombs and a number of totally destructive techniques here. But President Obama, perhaps the only qualified member in the room to deal with this, insisted on the Special Forces. No one else thought of that. President Obama. Not a single intelligence adviser, not a single national security adviser, not a single military adviser came up with the idea of using SEAL Team 6 or any Special Forces."

Some members of the media didn't pick up on the joke, either. Jon Bershad of Mediaite, for instance,marveled at Limbaugh's remarks. "Limbaugh opened his show today with huge praise for his President, his military, and his country," Bershad noted. "That's right, folks. America can still get along." After some correspondents noted that Limbaugh was speaking with tongue firmly in cheek, Bershad added an update, arguing that "in the world of talk radio, everything's relative" and that the show's opening segment was "about as nice as Limbaugh's ever going to get on Obama."

Such confusion is understandable--especially since so many of Obama's dogged pursuers were offering genuine thanks and praise to one of the most frequently lambasted figures on their broadcasts.

"I want to personally congratulate President Obama and the men and women of the Armed Forces for a job well done," said Donald Trump, who just a week earlier was on his crusade to disprove Obama's American citizenship, in a statement to ABC News. "We should spend the next several days not debating party politics, but in remembrance of those who lost their lives on 9/11 and those currently fighting for our freedom. God Bless America!"

Fox News host Glenn Beck also had some kind words. "First of all, congratulations to President Obama. He got him," the conservative talk show host said in response to the news of bin Laden's death. "Thank you, President Obama, thank you." And Beck's colleague on Fox, Sean Hannity, was no less fulsome in his praise, saying that Obama's leadership of the mission was "gutsy" and "the right thing to do."

Less surprising, naturally, was the chorus of admiration offered on the left-leaning airwaves of MSNBC Monday night.

"President Bush had 2,686 days to catch Osama bin Laden. President Obama got that job done in 831 days," said Lawrence O'Donnell at the start of his 8 p.m. show. "Somehow ... bin Laden got the feeling that he could settle down comfortable in a walled fortress is a Pakistan suburb. But someone--someone-- was still thinking about bin Laden in a lethal way. ... President Obama would make his biggest national security priority getting Osama bin Laden, and so he did."

Meanwhile, Jon Stewart brought his conflicted monologue on the meaning of bin Laden's death to resolution on a patriotic note, suggesting that at least this one sardonic pundit actually does believe we can all just get along.

"For the last 10 years, al Qaeda had the world's attention. They apparently wanted an ideology competition, and for all of our rights and wrongs, all al Qaeda seems to have come up with is, 'Uh, we killed some Americans." ... They have nothing," he said. "Can they still do damage? I'm sure. But we're back, baby."

The Fall ......of Yet Another Hard Drive

I woke up this morning to a computer that just wouldn't hum, spin or purrrrr for me. And that never happens to me! I spent hours on the phone trying to wake up my brother and with DELL computer techs. My warranty expired Jan 2009. And I paid $50.00 for them to tell me that my hard drive had crashed. The good thing is that. I purchased a new warranty and the replacement of the hard drive is covered. And I only lost, scratch that, don't have access to about three months of photography that was saved on my desktop. The rest of information is on my external hard drive. YESSSSS LORD!!!! So yet another reason to evolve, change and rise to the occasion.

Convergence of Vision: The Power of Art
Black Artists of DC (BADC) Presents First Public
Institution Exhibit At Prince George’s Community
College

WASHINGTON, DC – Bringing together multiple ideas,
expressions, and experiences to create the ultimate
masterpiece, a collective vision through the power of
art – this is what Black Artists of DC (BADC) seeks to
accomplish through their exhibit, Convergence of
Vision: The Power of Art, showing at the Prince
George’s Community College’s (PGCC) Marlborough
Gallery from September 18th – October 12th. The
exhibit will be the group’s first showing at a public
institution, and is apart of the PGCC’s initiative to
advance the arts and music.

Convergence will feature the work of 34 of the group’s
artists – as they seek to make a unified artistic
statement. “The aim of this exhibit is to demonstrate
how the vision of these individual artists can be
collected, organized, and focused to make a statement
of power, beauty, and eloquence,” says Amber
Robles-Gordon, BADC artist and curator of the show.

In addition to the convergence of art concepts in each
piece, this partnership between BADC and PGCC
represents their convergence of vision, which is one
of aligning art, education and community development.
To foster the relationship of these, the group will
also host weekly author talks on a variety of topics.
“As a group, BADC seeks to engage and educate our
community in the history and value of Black art, says
Claudia Gibson-Hunter, BADC facilitator. “There is
such a wealth of artistic talent in the Washington
metropolitan area, and we want to expose our community
to the hidden treasures they have right in their own
backyards.”

An opening reception for the exhibit will take place
on Saturday, September 23rd, from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. A
schedule of weekly artists talks will follow. For more

a past juicy enough that she's looking forward to retelling it in her
old age....

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ...
a set of screwdrivers, a cordless drill, and a black lace bra...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ..
one friend who always makes her laugh.. and one who lets her cry...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ...
a good piece of furniture not previously owned by anyone else in her
family...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE ..
eight matching plates, wine glasses with stems, and a recipe for
a meal, that will make her guests feel honored...

A WOMAN SHOULD HAVE
a feeling of control over her destiny..

My Trip to The Paper Store

I love the Paper Store ... the store is in Georgetown... the people aren't very warm. We were only in Georgetown for 35 minutes and we saw two car accidents and a black BMW tried to ram us.
But the pictures and the PAPER were worth it!
