2012: The Year of the Smile

 Wednesday January 18, 2012 (smile)

All right... Just in case anyone needs to know. I am officially done with 2011 and joyously moving on to 2012 (smile). I've promised myself I would smile each time I thought about 2012 (smile), each time I wrote 2012 (smile), each time I read 2012 (smile), each time I hear 2012 (smile). 2012 (smile) is going to be a beautiful year.

I am Earth....

I am Earth.
I nurture my roots.
I am air.
I breathe deeply.
I am free.
I radiate passion.
I am water.
I feel at peace.

Dear Universe

As you know, I dream pretty BIG. I admit sometimes too big. Bump that! Thinking BIG just gives me more wonderful things to strive for. So, my work is telling me to "Go BIGGER! Much Bigger!" I still want to create little things. Ok, ok smaller artwork but only when I need a break from the BIG stuff.

I want to work on four, five concepts at the same time. My art has taken over my home and I am ok with that.

However, I need more space. I want my HOME (Living room, dinning room, laundry room…..)  to fit into my STUDIO. Similar to Mr. Smith’s old space. Just in case you need a visual reference.

Dear Mother, Father, God, Universe please don’t forget the things on the longer version of this list. Smile.

Warmly, Respectfully, and with Much Love,

Amber

Yes, I grew up in Arlington....

I was persuaded (tricked) into going to a pre-season marching band presentation last night in Arlington, VA. It was interesting. The band was…. good. Halfway through it I thought my son might sprint back to the car and refuse to come out until it was done. Actually, maybe that’s what I wanted to do. But I couldn’t, I was supporting a family member and I was in Arlington. Which meant I had to behave as an Arlingtonian. I appreciate the time and energy that the kids, the parents, and the school have put into establishing and maintaining this band, but…. the performance felt like a soothing bedtime story at 7:30 pm on a Friday night. Yes, I grew up in Arlington but I do not miss it AT ALL.

I just looked up Arlingtonian. http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Arlingtonian Wow…didn’t mean it that way. Note to folks that happen to read this: please direct any concerns with the link that is posted above to http://www.urbandictionary.com.
All I meant “was a person who is from or currently lives and enjoys living in the city of Arlington.”

Art For Joy, Love and Life

a community voice project

digital storytelling

In Fall 2010, film and anthropology students from American University’s School of Communication and College of Arts and Sciences, working with the Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum, assisted community artists in Southeast Washington to create their own original digital stories.

In this class, COMMUNITY DOCUMENTARY: Stories of Transformation, storytellers use photographs, family documents, community archives, and their own voice to create first-person narratives.

Amber Robles-Gordon received some blunt criticism during her graduate studies when she was told she couldn’t seem to separate herself from her artwork. Robles-Gordon became introspective, and identified why she’s so entrenched in her art.

"I really enjoyed the experience. Lena was wonderful,
we really clicked. We became friends, exchanging
stories and music."
